There are twelve houses in astrology, each house representing certain specific areas of life. The 8th house represents death, the 2nd house represents wealth accumulation, and family, the 7th represents marriage and business, and the 11th house represents gains and fulfillment of desires.

The 1st house in Astrology, also known as the Lagna or Ascendant, represents our self-identity, personality, physical appearance, overall health and immunity, and overall well-being and success.

Here, let’s explore the first house, its significations, different planets falling in the first house, different zodiac signs in the first house, and its impact on life according to Vedic astrology.

What is the 1st House in Astrology?

The 1st house (Tanu Bhava / Lagna Sthan in Vedic astrology), or Lagna, is the starting point of the birth chart.  

In Vedic astrology, the 1st house is the house of self, which includes:

• Body and Appearance – How a person looks and their overall health. General health, immunity, vitality. The condition of the Lagna (first house) and its ruling planet determines a person’s strength, vitality, and overall well-being.
• Personality and Temperament – How they think, act, and react to situations. General characteristics of a person.
• Beginnings and Life Path – Starting and beginning of events, place of birth.
• Strength and Vitality – Their stamina, willpower, and resistance to diseases.
• Overall Success and Well-being – The foundation for achievements and personal growth. Power, status, or the lack of it.
• Self-Identity and Ego: The 1st house is directly linked to how we view ourselves and how we are perceived.
• Karma and Past Life Influence: In Vedic astrology, the 1st house is shaped by past life karma and sets the stage for one’s present journey.
• Influence on Entire Horoscope: A strong and well-placed Lagna ensures the prosperity of other houses.

In terms of body parts, the 1st house is about the body in general, the head and upper facial region.

Ruling Planet and Sign of the First House

The natural ruler of the 1st house in astrology is Aries (Mesha), governed by Mars (Mangal).

While Aries is the natural ruler of the 1st house in astrology, in an individual’s birth chart, Aries is not always in the Lagna (first house/Ascendant).

Your personal Lagna (Ascendant) is determined by the sign rising on the eastern horizon at the time and place of your birth. If Capricorn was rising on the eastern horizon when you were born, then Capricorn is your first house sign, you are Capricorn rising/Capricorn ascendant (Lagna). The lord of Capricorn is Saturn, hence, your first house lord is Saturn.

For example:

• If the Lagna is Taurus (Vrishabha Lagna), ruled by Venus (Shukra), the native will possess a charming, diplomatic, and artistic nature.
• If the Lagna is Scorpio (Vrischika Lagna), ruled by Mars (Mangal), the person will be intense, secretive, and determined.

As mentioned above, Venus in 1st house makes one attractive, charming, and inclined towards luxury and beauty. Venus in 1st house in Pisces makes a person deeply romantic, artistic, and spiritually inclined. They are also compassionate. Here Pisces is modifying the energy of Venus by adding its spiritual compassionate nature.

Similarly, Venus in 1st house in Virgo makes natives critical in relationships, perfectionists, and struggling to express affection freely. They will be inclined towards luxury and beauty, however, alongside this, they will exhibit the character traits mentioned earlier from Virgo’s nature.
