There are twelve houses in astrology. Each house represents certain specific areas of life. The 8th house represents death, sex, and transformations, the 12th house represents expenses, bed pleasures, jails, and spirituality, the 7th house represents marriage and business, and the 11th house represents gains and fulfillment of desires.
Here, let’s explore the second house, its significations, different planets falling in the second house, different zodiac signs falling in the second house, and its impact on life according to Vedic astrology.
‘We suggest you to read ‘How to Read Vedic Astrology Chart‘ before reading this one as it will make it much easier for you to learn and absorb information from this blog after you read it.’
What is the 2nd House in Astrology?
The 2nd house known as Dhana Bhava in Vedic astrology is the house of wealth, speech, family, and food. It governs:
- Wealth and Finances – Financial prosperity, savings, material possessions, and income sources.
- Family and Upbringing – Relationship with one’s immediate family, particularly early childhood experiences.
- Speech and Communication – How one speaks, their tone, clarity, and impact of words. It also determines whether one is eloquent or harsh in speech.
- Food and Consumption – Eating habits, preferences, and overall relationship with food.
- Values and Ethics – Personal principles, moral standards, and what one values most in life.
- Face and Eyes – It governs the face, eyes, mouth, and throat, influencing beauty and expressions.
A strong 2nd house ensures financial stability, nourishing food choices, and harmonious family relations. A weak or afflicted 2nd house can lead to financial struggles, speech issues, and conflicts within the family.
Ruling Planet and Sign of the Second House
The zodiac sign follows a sequential order based on the ascendant. For instance, if the first house sign, the ascendant is Gemini, then 2nd house sign will be Cancer, the third house sign will be Leo, and the fourth house sign will be Virgo.
Similarly, if the first house sign, the ascendant is Capricorn, then the 2nd house sign is Aquarius, and the 5th house sign is Taurus. You can refer to ‘How to Read Vedic Astrology Chart‘ to understand the 12 signs and their lord.
Here, let’s take an example of Gemini to make things easier to understand. If Gemini falls in your 2nd house, then Mercury is the lord of your 2nd House. What this means is that now mercury in your chart governs wealth, speech, family life, and food and its placement influences how much (and also how) a person earns, saves, eats, speaks, and communicates with their family.
If planet Mercury is strong and well placed in the birth chart (in the later blogs we will be looking at how to figure out if a planet is strong and well placed or weak and afflicted), then the person is likely to be financially intelligent, good at managing money, and may earn through communication, business, writing, teaching or trading (basically from the areas of life governed by mercury). Their speech will be articulated, persuasive, and witty, making them very good at careers that require verbal/written skills. They will have a communicative and intellectual family environment and may enjoy light, fresh foods.
However, if planet Mercury is badly placed or afflicted in the birth chart, the person will struggle with financial instability, his speech will lead to miscommunication, and there can be a tendency to be manipulative and deceptive in speech. Family interactions can be argumentative, misunderstandings, or lack of emotional bonding due to poor communication, and there can be irregular eating habits or digestive issues.
The lord of the house also gives the source of the area of life of that specific house. For instance, the 2nd house represents the money and if we have to look at where the sources of wealth accumulation in your life will come from, then we have to analyze the lord of the 2nd house.

Here, let’s suppose, Mercury, the lord of the second house is in the 5th house, then wealth may come from speculations, education hence teaching, innovations, creative fields, the entertainment industry, and so on. Basically, from the areas that govern the 5th house such as entertainment, speculation, education, and innovation.
